Personal Profile

Biography

Dr. Jianing Wang has long been dedicated to research in mass spectrometry imaging, spatial multiomics, and advanced molecular imaging technologies. He has served as principal investigator on major national and internationally peer-reviewed research grants, including the Original Exploration Program and General Program of the National Natural Science Foundation of China and the General Research Fund of the Hong Kong Research Grants Council. He pioneered and has led the development of expansion mass spectrometry imaging (ExMSI), overcoming the spatial resolution limitations of conventional mass spectrometry imaging to achieve an approximately tenfold improvement in resolution and helping establish ExMSI as an emerging field of ultrahigh-resolution molecular imaging by mass spectrometry. He has established and refined a suite of highly sensitive methods for metabolite mass spectrometry imaging using the NEDC matrix, helping make NEDC one of the most widely used matrices of choice for metabolite imaging. He also demonstrated the first mass spectrometry imaging of endogenous chiral molecules and developed multiple mass spectrometry methods that have been widely adopted worldwide.

His current research addresses key challenges and emerging directions in biological mass spectrometry, with a focus on developing new molecular imaging methods, instruments, and paradigms and advancing their applications in biomedicine, chemistry, and marine science. He has published more than 70 peer-reviewed papers and holds eight granted invention patents. His innovations in mass spectrometry imaging received a Silver Medal at the 51st International Exhibition of Inventions Geneva in 2026. He currently serves as a standing committee member of the Life Omics Branch and a committee member of the Medical Mass Spectrometry Branch of the China Association for Instrumental Analysis, a member of the Chinese Hub working group of the International Lipidomics Society, and an editorial board member of Health and Metabolism.
